Kelly represents the interests of businesses, including healthcare providers, hospitals, and healthcare-related businesses in matters ranging from transactions and regulatory compliance to interstate litigation.

Born and raised on a family cattle ranch in Cheatham County, Tennessee, Kelly was the first person in his immediate family to attend college.  He graduated with honors from the University of Tennessee with a degree in writing.  He also served in the United States Army for approximately 10 years, both as an enlisted soldier and as an active-duty officer.  During this time, Kelly served as an Army scout, and later, as a military intelligence officer.  After completing his military service, Kelly graduated from the University of Tennessee College of Law and completed a two-year clerkship with Chief Judge Roderick T. Kennedy of the New Mexico Court of Appeals in Santa Fe, New Mexico.

Among his civic and bar-related activities, Kelly serves on the Board of Governors of the Tennessee Bar Association (TBA), the Steering Committee for the TBA’s Leadership Law Program, and the Executive Committee for the TBA’s Health Law Section .  He is past President and current Secretary of Knoxville’s historic Bijou Theatre.  In addition, Kelly devotes considerable time as a wilderness first responder for Backcountry Unit Search and Rescue (BUSAR), which provides specialized, all-hazards rescue support to the Great Smoky Mountains National Park.

Kelly often speaks at local, state, and national events, examples of which include the Southeastern Independent Physicians’ Association, the National Commission on Correctional Healthcare, the Society for Post-Acute and Long-Term Care Medicine, the Hamilton Burnett Inns of Court, the University of Tennessee (Winston) College of Law, the Lincoln Memorial University (LMU) College of Osteopathic Medicine, the LMU College of Law, the Knoxville Bar Association, and various continuing legal education courses for the TBA.  Kelly’s writing has been published in multiple periodicals and magazines, including East Tennessee Medical News, Dicta, and the Knoxville Academy of Medicine’s quarterly magazine.

Kelly is a member of the American Health Law Association, the East Tennessee Historical Society, and the Veterans of Foreign Wars of the United States.  He has been inducted into both the Honorable Order of Saint Barbara (2004) and the Military Order of the Tennessee Ranger (1998).  Kelly possesses an AV–Preeminent rating from Martindale-Hubbell and has been listed among the Best Lawyers in America for many years.  On multiple occasions, Kelly has been listed in Knoxville CityView Magazine’s Top Attorneys List.

Kelly enjoys spending time with his wife and three sons.  He enjoys reading, playing guitar, and lifting weights.
