Throwback Thursday – THE 26TH DAY OF NOVEMBER by Melissa Carrasco

As the Thanksgiving holiday approaches, we look back to the November 2020 edition of KBA’s DICTA publication. Melissa Carrasco explains the impact that lawyers had on the celebration of Thanksgiving. In turbulent times, two attorneys sought a day set aside for thanks. Elias Boudinot, an attorney and House Representative, proposed a resolution that encouraged the public to take time to give thanks and spread hope for the newly created country. President Abraham Lincoln, with some possible influence from author Sarah Hale, issued a Presidential Proclamation calling for a day of thanksgiving among the hardship brought by the Civil War. Thanksgiving is a long standing tradition, and these historical examples remind us that even in chaotic or uncertain times, Thanksgiving is a day to give thanks for what we have.
