Last year Walmart was ordered to pay Variety Stores, Inc. over 32 million dollars because Walmart used a name that Variety Stores, Inc. owned. Picking the wrong brand name can be really expensive.     Egerton McAfee teams up with Barristers to help out at the Volunteer Ministry Center


    On June 25th, in conjunction with the Knoxville Barristers Organization, Egerton McAfee's lawyers and law clerks served around 35 homeless residents of Knox County, through the Volunteer Ministry Center.

    The Knoxville Barristers is a service oriented group comprised of Knoxville Bar Association Members who are under the age of 36 or have been practicing for less than 5 years. The Barristers provide volunteer services in a number of ways throughout the Knoxville community, including involvement with the Second Harvest Food Bank, Habitat for Humanity, and other non-profit charity groups.

    Cheryl Rice to Chair Governor's Council


    Governor Bill Haslam recently named the 11 members of the Governor's Council for Judicial Appointments. Egerton, McAfee shareholder Cheryl G. Rice was selected as one of three council members representing the Eastern Division of Tennessee, and Rice was appointed Chair of the Council. Governor Haslam created the Council by executive order following the recent passage of Amendment Two to the Tennessee Constitution. After receiving notice that a trial or appellate court vacancy has occurred or is impending, and after a public hearing, the Council will select three candidates who are most qualified to fill the vacancy and send those names to the governor as nominees for the appointment. The governor will fill the vacancy by appointing a person from among the three nominated or require the Council to submit a panel of three additional nominees. Rice has been a shareholder at Egerton, McAfee since 2002 where she focuses her practice in the areas of commercial litigation, contract disputes, trade practice issues and creditors' rights. Rice is also serving as the 2014-15 President of TLAW, Tennessee's statewide women's bar organization.


    Melissa Carrasco named Shareholder


    Egerton, McAfee attorney Melissa Carrasco has been elected as a shareholder in the firm. A 2010 summa cum laude graduate of the University of Tennessee College of Law, Carrasco focuses her practice is the areas of labor and employment practices, immigration law and related litigation.


    Egerton, McAfee participate in the Food Initiative at Second Harvest


    Second Harvest

    Several Egerton McAfee attorneys and their families recently participated in the Firms for Food Initiative at Second Harvest Food Bank of East Tennessee in Maryville. While at Second Harvest, the Egerton McAfee volunteers sorted and repackaged food for Second Harvest to distribute to those in need in our communities. The Firms for Food Initiative is a year-round event hosted by the Barristers of the Knoxville Bar Association.


    Egerton, McAfee Attorney Assumes Presidency of TLAW


    Cheryl Rice was installed as President of the Tennessee Lawyers' Association for Women (TLAW) during TLAW's recent annual meeting in Gatlinburg. Tennessee Supreme Court Chief Justice Gary L. Wade was on hand to administer the oath and swear in the officers and directors. TLAW is Tennessee's statewide women's bar organization. It strives to advance the success of women attorneys and to improve the status of women in our society.

    Several firm employees joined with family members on Sunday, October 6, 2013, to walk in the American Cancer Society's Making Strides Against Breast Cancer. The employee's efforts raised almost $1,100 in the fight against breast cancer. This year marked the 100th anniversary of the American Cancer Society, and we were pleased to be a part of the celebration and to support such a worthwhile cause.

    Egerton, McAfee shareholder Cheryl G. Rice was sworn in by Supreme Court Chief Justice Gary Wade on Friday, June 14th as President-Elect of the Tennessee Lawyers' Association for Women. The ceremony installing TLAW's 2013-2014 officers took place at TLAW's annual business meeting held in conjunction with the Tennessee Bar Association's annual convention in Nashville. TLAW is Tennessee's statewide women's bar association which strives to improve the participation and professional standing of women lawyers in the legal profession and to support the status and progress of women in society.     Robert Williams joins us as CFO and Director of Operations


    Robert started his career with Touche Ross & Co (subsequently combined with Deloitte) where his audit background focused on healthcare and manufacturing. He then spent the next portion of his career in senior management roles primarily with Fortune 500 companies such as The Coca-Cola Company, Coca-Cola Enterprises, and U.S. Cellular. His roles within these organizations included financial leadership for various regions and divisions, acquisition due diligence, financial system design and implementation, and process improvements and controls. His roles have lead him to Birmingham, Atlanta, Knoxville, St. Louis, and Chicago.

    Robert has been an active member of the Knoxville community for over 20 years. He has served on the Board of the Smoky Mountain Council of the Boy Scouts of America, as the chairman of an Allocation Panel and on the Board of Directors for United Way of Greater Knoxville, and as a volunteer for Junior Achievement and Habitat for Humanity.     Egerton, McAfee adds to its team

    Attorney Bradley C. Sagraves, who in 2009 received his Master of Laws in Taxation from the University of Florida, has joined Egerton, McAfee as an associate attorney. Brad attended Lee University in Cleveland, Tennessee for his undergraduate degree and the University of Tennessee for law school. Brad has practiced law in Knoxville since 2009 in another local Knoxville firm. At Egerton, McAfee, Brad will continue to practice in the areas of Taxation, Estate Planning and Probate as well as Commercial, Real Estate and Corporate Law.
